A local approximation for dynamic polarizability leads to a nonlocal functional for the long-range dispersion interaction energy via an imaginary-frequency integral. We analyze several local polarizability approximations and argue that the form underlying the construction of our recent van der Waals functional [O.] is particularly well physically justified. Using this improved formula, we compute dynamic dipole polarizabilities and van der Waals C 6 coefficients for a set of atoms and molecules. Good agreement with the benchmark values is obtained in most cases.

Local decomposition of imaginary polarizabilities and dispersion coefficients.

We present a new way to compute the two-body contribution to the dispersion energy using ab initio theory. By combining the complex polarization propagator method and the LoProp transformation, local contributions to the Casimir-Polder interaction is obtained. The full dispersion energy in dimer systems consisting of pairs of molecules including H2, N2, CO, CH4, pyridine, and benzene is investi...

van der Waals Interactions in Cholesteric Liquid Crystals

Microscopic calculations of the pitch of cholesteric liquid crystals are based on a few types of interactions between molecules: (1) short-range repulsive, (2) direct Coulomb, and (3) long-range van der Waals interactions. Recently, it was shown that first two types cannot be treated in the frame of mean-field approximation. Here we show that, contrary to common belief, an accurate evaluation o...

In this study, the contributions of London dispersion forces to the strength of aromatic stacking interactions in solution were experimentally assessed using a small molecule model system. A series of molecular torsion balances were designed to measure an intramolecular stacking interaction via a conformational equilibrium. To probe the importance of the dispersion term, the size and polarizabi...

Polarizability is a key molecular property controlling induction and dispersion forces in molecules, and atomic polarizabilities in molecules are widely used elements both in qualitative schemes for understanding molecular interactions and in quantitative methods for modeling them. Unfortunately, experimental probes of local polarizability are not readily available. Here we predict the polariza...
